Cities are climate leaders. 64% of EUROCITIES members have already committed to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Among them, 12 cities have even committed to reach neutrality before 2040. And climate mitigation is only one side of the coin; 87.5% of our cities have adopted climate adaptation strategies to adapt to the impact of climate change and to protect their citizens. This publication highlights examples of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies carried out by twelve cities from all over Europe in four different sectors: buildings; energy; governance; and transport. Their innovative solutions cover a broad range of measures going from establishing a municipal carbon budget to deeply retrofitting buildings, passing by the introduction of cheap and free monthly passes for public transport to reducing energy demand while increasing households’ renewable energy consumption.
